The turquoise sea, clear blue sky and recurrent lapping waves are the perfect holiday experience for an everyday traveler. Now imagine having that experience for the entirety of your vacation stay. That is how the overwater bungalow concept became an undisputed luxury holiday theme.

Once a unique concept that required one to fly halfway across the world to experience, the overwater bungalows are now a famed concept in the Caribbean. The picturesque island of Jamaica has two Sandals resorts with picture-perfect villas floating over the peacock blue sea.

Jamaica’s overwater bungalows at Sandals South Coast are the complete travel experience. Hammocks hang only a few feet above the water furnished to pure perfection.

History of Sandals

It’s at Sandals where the concept of overwater bungalows was hatched, and the first one opened its doors on December 1, 2016, at Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay. The resort, located only 10 minutes from Sangster Airport, has a touch of British imperialism depicted in the Georgian-style house complimented by colorful gardens bursting with roaming peacocks.

Sandals South Coast is a 2-mile stretch of fine white sand within a 500-acre nature preserve in White House, Jamaica. It features three distinctive European villages and the country’s largest swimming pool.

Both Sandals resorts are all-inclusive with unlimited gourmet dining and beautiful bars with premium liquor.

A trip from Sangster Airport will take about 90 minutes, relatively longer than getting to Sandals Royal Caribbean but worth it. Sandals South Coast gives the aura of the tropical vacation resort thanks to its swim-up bars, cabanas in the sand, catamarans, poolside volleyball, and paddle boarders.

There are 12 overwater villas at Sandals South Coast, offering visitors a 360-degree ocean view. The stunning glass floor panels and lighting enable visitors to view the ocean at any time of the day. Every bungalow is luxuriously furnished with king-sized beds and spa-style bathrooms with clean walk-in rain showers. In addition, visitors can enjoy private patios with extended sun deck, sun loungers, a restaurant and a shower outside the hammock.

Visitors can choose from two room options: romantic honeymoon bungalows or infinity room villas. Both options have a 360-degree ocean view with glass floor panels so visitors can see the clear blue sea below.

All villas are luxuriously furnished with king-sized beds and spa-style bathrooms with walk-in showers. The immaculate soaking tub for two offers the coast’s best view of the sunset. In addition, guests in the overwater bungalows will have a personal butler at their disposal throughout their stay. The butler helps visitors unpack luggage, serves them meals and meets other modest needs during their stay.

Pro-tip: Endeavor to carry a mobile phone lanyard for your overwater stay in Sandals.
