Top 10 Amazing Winter Landscapes

Love it or hate it, winter is one of the most beautiful seasons, turning relatively uninteresting landscapes into a winter wonderland. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most wonderful winter landscapes around the world.

10. Tadami River, Aizu, Japan

Japan is known for amazing places to visit during Winter and this region of Japan sees some of the most snowfall in the country. Come here during the winter months to see spectacular vistas when the Aizu forests get blanketed in snow.

The famous bridge over the Tadami River is a must-see as well.

9. Snake River, Wyoming, USA

Starting in Yellowstone National park, this 1,078-mile-long river flows through 4 states before emptying into the Pacific. It can be found in some famous parks such as Grand Teton National Park and Hells Canyon.

It’s a wonderful site during the winter, most notably from above where it gets its name.

8. Snoqualmie Falls, Seattle, Washington, USA

This 268-foot waterfall is one of Washington’s most popular scenic destinations. During the winter months, the falls freeze, forming amazing giant icicles. There is also a large park, observation deck, and a gift shop to check out.

7. Abraham Lake, Alberta, Canada

Found on the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta, this artificial lake was created in 1972 and has the same blue color as other glacial lakes in the area, which is caused by rock flour.

When it gets really cold, the lake freezes over creating unique ice bubbles of methane gas frozen in time.

6. Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes, Switzerland

7. The Blue Pond, Biei, Hokkaido, Japan

You can get to this famous little blue pond from the quaint town of Biei. The trees growing out of the lake and frozen during the winter make a unique sight.

The contrast of the bright blue and the white snow is one of a kind and after Apple used it as the background for their OSX Mountain Lion, it became world-renowned.

6. Kirkjufell, Iceland

This mountain looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel or fairytale. The strangely shaped mountain is a site to behold even in spring but come winter it takes on a whole other persona.

If you’re lucky enough you’ll get to see the Northern Lights majestically surround the mountain. Afterward, you can visit Grundarfjörður, a small town with only 900 people.

5. Perito Moreno, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina

One of the main tourist sights in the Patagonia region, this monolithic glacier is best explored by hiking on it.

Unlike other glaciers around the world this one is actually not retreating because it continues to accumulate mass at a rate similar to that of its loss and no one knows why.

This is good because it will be around for many centuries to come. you can get here from El Calafate and be sure to enjoy the beautiful ride.

2. Lake Bled, Slovenia

One of the most iconic lakes in the world, the famous Bled church on the island in the middle becomes even more magical in the winter. Sometimes the lake can even freeze over for a truly special sight.

1. Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russia

The deepest and oldest lake in the world at 1,642 m (5,387 ft) deep, becomes extra spectacular in the winter creating unique ice sculptures and patterns.

Although going to Russia during the winter is probably not the best idea, it’s definitely worth it to see this “Sacred Sea” as it’s called by the locals.

During the winter it transforms into a 12,200-square-mile ice rink. You can also rent a dog sled or snowmobile for extra fun and explore the main spectacular cave formations!
